About Dermaroller

Dermaroller is designed to produce thousands of small holes or columns in the skin. Each microneedle on the roller penetrates the second layer of the skin (dermis). These will rapidly close, enabling the skin to recover quickly – often within 24 hours. This process will stimulate your body to naturally regenerate and repair the treated skin, working below the surface in the dermis. This takes time as new collagen is formed, new skin cells are generated and the dermis is enhanced.

We use a topical anaesthetic to numb your skin so that the procedure remains comfortable. This will normally take around 30 minutes to take effect. Once numbed, the procedure takes around 20 minutes depending upon the area being treated.

We recommend that your treatment consists of a series of a minimum of three procedures, each approximately six weeks apart. Depending upon your skin problem it may be necessary to increase the number of treatments required.

It can take up to six weeks for visible signs of regeneration and repair to be obvious and the process will continue over the following month, ensuring you get a natural, long-lasting enhancement.

Side effects and Contraindications

We would not recommend dermaroller for those;

  • With active cold sores or previous cold sores without pre-treatment with antiviral medication acyclovir. This is due to the risk of reactivation
  • Taking anticoagulant therapy – e.g. Warfarin, NOAC therapy, Aspirin or Aspirin-like drugs. There are also dietary supplements with similar effects
  • Taking antibiotics or other medication causing UV sensitivity. E.g. tetracyclines or amiodarone
  • History of keloid scarring
  • Taking other skin irritating treatments; e.g. Glycolic or Salicylic acid based treatments or retinoids
  • With active acne, psoriasis, papules, pustules, infection
  • With active cancer in the treatment area
  • With allergy to local anaesthetic
  • With impaired immune system
  • Who are pregnant or breast feeding

Aftercare

Immediately after your dermaroller procedure you will look as though you have moderate sunburn and your skin may feel warm and tighter than usual. This will start to subside over the next 24 hours. We will apply Control Tactics or a Hyaluronic acid based product to hydrate and plump the skin and enhance the treatment response. We would also recommend using broad spectrum, high-level UV protection, such as Heliocare. Cleaning your face should be performed with tepid water until the redness has gone.

Once the redness has cleared up on the treated area of your skin it is important to take care of your skin daily with an effective anti-ageing regime. The right regime will protect against light and environmental damage as well as enhance the rejuvenation process.
