About dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are formulated to treat everything from fine lines to deep wrinkles and folds and almost all ares affected by volume loss; mainly lips and cheeks. We use a hyaluronic acid based facial filler which is smooth and creates subtle volume.

We only use the highest quality, tested and certified dermal fillers.

Please do not expose skin to UV (including the use on sun beds and fake tan) for at least four weeks prior to treatments

Drink water daily, preferably up 2 litres to maintain hydration

If you are prone to cold sores around the mouth, and this is the area which you want to be treated, we can prescribe Zovirax tablets for you, to be taken just before and for a few days after the procedure.

If you bruise easily, you may want to take arnica tablets for 1 day before the treatment

The treatment itself generally takes around 30-45 minutes. Prior to the injection, we will assess your face and discuss your needs to come up with your tailored treatment plan. We use a local anesthetic cream, applied 30 minutes before the injection. You will feel the injection, but it should not be painful

You can return to work and normal activities (avoiding the specifics in the aftercare) immediately and will notice the difference straight away

The effects can last 12-18 months.

Risks and side effects of dermal fillers

Side effects are rare and usually only mild to moderate in severity.

  • The most common are slight bruising at the injection site. If this does happen apply ice and arnica cream, or take arnica tablets for 5 days after the treatment.
  • Asymmetry, under correction or over correction occur occasionally
  • Rarely there is unpredictable persistence of filler, either shorter or longer than anticipated.
  • Visible, raised areas or small bumps at the injection site
  • With injections there is always a risk of infection or allergy to the injected substance.
  • Reported side effects (exceptionally rare) are the breakdown of skin over the treated area, abscess formation and scar.

Aftercare

We recommend the use of an SPF cream in addition to refraining from the following

  • Avoid excess exercise for 24-48hrs
  • Avoid swimming (especially with goggles if your cheeks have been treated) and heat treatments; e.g. sauna, steam room, etc.
  • Avoid picking the or touching the area
  • Avoiding sunbeds for 2 weeks. Fake tan should also be avoided
  • Cleaning your face should be performed with a gentle cleanser and tepid water until the redness has gone.
  • Only use mineral makeup directly after treatment. Any others, wait 24hrs.
  • We will massage the area straight after the treatment, but otherwise avoid picking the areas treated and keep touching those areas to a minimum as this increases the risk of deforming or dislodging the filler; i.e. no facials, chemical peels, liquid nitrogen or laser treatments
  • Avoid perfumes, oil and moisturisers to the treated areas for 24hrs
  • Do not consume excessive alcohol as this may increase the amount of bruising.
  • Redness, swelling and itching should subside in 2 days, however it can take up to 2 weeks
  • If you get any bruising, apply ice and arnica cream, or take arnica tablets for 5 days after the treatment.
  • If you have had cheek filler, try to sleep on your back for the next 3 nights

We hope you are happy with the result of your treatment; I will happily see you as required to assess the results and advise as necessary.
