About Toxin treatment

Anti-wrinkle treatment with Botulinum toxin A is effective and safe. It is widely used with the aim of making you look more youthful and energetic without the need to resort to expensive and risky surgery or live with scars. Botulinum toxin A is a prescription only medication and is done so on a named patient basis. This means you will have to have our consultation with our doctor, face to face, so that we can ensure you do not have any conflicting medical conditions and so we can issue the prescription.

The toxin works by relaxing the underlying facial muscles that cause your skin to crease and wrinkle. A common misconception is that the aim of toxin therapy is to paralyze the muscles in the face. While this can happen with large amounts of toxin, most practitioners will only inject just the amount that allows you to have some limited activity while still smoothing out the skin. The aim is not to remove all your facial expressions, but to prevent the extreme, unconscious frowns that cause the skin creases. Once relaxed, your skin smooths out and lines disappear.

We aim to leave a natural, fresh, pleasing appearance and avoid the mask like, unnatural and glossy appearance often associated with overuse or inappropriate placement. The results last up to 4 months.

Risks and Side Effects

Toxin therapy has an excellent safety record. The side effects are mild, and short lived and include:

  • Bruising at injection site
  • Headache
  • Eye lid droop
  • Eyebrow droop
  • Lip droop
  • Watery eyes
  • Sensitivity to light

Side effects are not permanent. Eye drops are available to help reduce problems with eyelid droop, which we can give you if needed

Botox can be used on the lower face and neck, but the possible side effects can be more severe and include:

  • Inability to chew food
  • Inability to swallow

These are also not permanent and occur only rarely

  • Do not rub or massage the treated areas for 48 hours after treatments as this may cause toxin spread to nearby muscles resulting in undesirable effects.
